I'm An Asshole and So Are You
"Laughter is the best medicine”
It’s a worn out saying and a cliché. But as with most clichés, it’s fucking true. To be more specific, "Cosmic Laughter" is the best medicine. Cosmic Laughter is the type of laughter that comes from deep understanding and positive intention. It is laughter accompanied by a warm smile. It’s a warm cup of Green Tea on a rainy day.
If somebody were to pick up my cherry red electric guitar and hack away at the strings with poor form and technique, I would laugh. I’d laugh because their ignorance of the proper way to play the instrument is inherently amusing. It’s funny because I can remember how I was once the same way.
The person I’m laughing at could interpret my laughter in two ways:
1.) A mean hearted jab at their inability to play the guitar
2.) A light hearted acknowledgement of the fact they’ve never been taught to play the guitar
The person who chooses option 1 will probably put the guitar down out of self defensive insecurity. They will be discouraged from picking up the instrument in the future, and will probably harbor some form of resentment towards me.
The person who chooses option 2 will laugh along with me. They will recognize their justifiable ignorance, and either ask for advice or go on as they were.
* The distinction between these two reactions possesses the capability to change lives. It is the difference between Cosmic Laughter and Self Righteous Bullshit *
We all have a Voice in the back our head that loves to talk. It talks about how the douchebag in the Ford F150 who cut us off in traffic is a self righteous prick. It talks about how our Precalculus professor is a cold hearted lizard who has no understanding or empathy. It talks about how much of an asshole your neighbor is for blaring music at 1 in the morning.
And this Voice may have some valid points, but it doesn’t always have your best interest in mind. Yes, the douchebag who cut you off was probably weaving like an asshole, your Precalc professor is most likely emotionally inconsiderate, and your neighbors should turn their music down.
But, you’ve probably cut people off in traffic, been emotionally absent, and blared music in the wee hours of the morning (at least I know I have).
It is easy to spot the flaws in others, but gut wrenchingly difficult to recognize your own. To paraphrase a famous Bible quote: We are quick to spot the speck in our neighbor’s eye, but slow to recognise the log in our own.
There is a saying: Anyone driving faster than you is a maniac and anyone driving slower is a moron
We’re all hypocrites. It is a fact of life.
And Cosmic Laughter is a result of acknowledging this simple truth. It is a soft chuckle and shrug of the shoulders that communicates:
I am human.
